Color Theory Assignment

Image
This weeks theme: color! The assignment was to choose one primary color to base a collection off of, using new and old photos. Initially, I chose yellow. But the color red ruled my weekend on a spontaneous trip to VT, and I ended up with these: These are my top 5 photos (in no order). All of them came from our weekend in VT. Again, I used mostly horizontal frames, I'm working on using more vertical arrangements. I chose these photos on the basis of narrative. The assignment was to choose 4, but I chose 5 to enhance the narrative. The shoe was outside the show venue, 2 and 3 were taken inside, and 4 and 5 were the morning after. My least favorite of the 5 is the photo of my friend's hand with the X on it, but I chose to include it because I felt like it showcased the fact that we were the only people at the show under 21. The 'morning after' shots (four and five) fit the mood of the trip. We'd driven 4 hours, slept in a car, an...

Street Exercises

Image
Initially, I set out to shoot from A-Z, however this became too tedious of a process and I could not find enough in the natural world which emulated the alphabet. I set out to photograph one 'block' of campus instead. The walk from the PCAC to the MUB. Here are my contact sheets: and the a-z portion of the assignment: F, I think? A? A C? or G? or lowercase e? Y? V? I? unsure Definitely an E or V D! O Another D an X of green Rock 'H' Y or V tree? Another E tree? A Tree Another A V? Y? Eh, like I said I kind of gave up on the alphabet and began to shoot the streets and leaves instead of the trees!

Light and Lens: Chapter 2 - Notes

Composition and Design Principles: Anything touched by light can be photographed, photography = a subtractive process, lead by the deliberate intentions of the photographer Principles: 1. Unity and Variety: cohesive shots, with distinct and separate moments 2. Emphasis: a placed focal point 3. Scale and Proportion: establish a mood, can empower or disenfranchise your subject 4. Balance: symmetrical, asymmetrical, or radial     - NOT just about the subject's placement, can also be achieved by color/value, texture, and contrast 5. Rhythm: Progressive, alternating, or none Elements: 1. Line 2. Shape 3. Space    - Actual: 2D area enclosed in the viewfinder/edges of print    - Pictoral: the illusion/sense of depth (flat v. infinite planes)    - Virtual: within the confines of the computer screen    - Pos/Neg: dark v. light, subject v. blank space, what is or is not  captured           ie. figu...

UNH College Woods - Scavenger Hunt

Image
This week we took to the College Woods with a task in mind: completing a scavenger hunt. We've been working more with manual exposure and as you can see, these images are rather underexposed. Shooting in the greenhouse was easier because it was naturally light, I can't say the same for the woods. The canopy and shade made this assignment hard! Here's my contact sheet: I was having a rough shoot at the college woods, so I decided to leave the homework portion of the assignment for another day. Here are some images which satisfy the hw requirements: brackets which demonstrate varying depth of field (using aperture), and over/under exposure. I'm still working on an image which shows motion through shutter speed.

Exploring the UNH Greenhouse

Image
We went to the UNH Greenhouses today to experiment more with manually setting our exposures. You can see how poorly exposed some of the beginning shots are, but by the end I think I got the hang of things.  I ended up getting comfortable and branching off behind the greenhouses near the end of our session. All in all, I would consider it a successful shoot, I took a LOT of photos. Of the photos taken, these are my favorite pictures (in no particular order) As you can see, all of these are horizontal! I think I was so wrapped up in properly exposing my photos that I kind of forgot about 'how' to take photos. My favorite thing about these photos is the low vantage, in most of the pictures I end up under/looking up towards my subject. I also really enjoy overcast skies, it makes every photo glow white and look pure. I'm excited to get back out and shoot again.
