Artist Talk: Molly and Myles
Date: November 27th, 2018
Molly and Myles are 2 UNH Alumni and artists. Molly studied art and went on to join the workforce in various odds and ends jobs (i.e.: waitressing, retail, etc.), pursuing art in her free time. Myles studied engineering, getting a job at an engineering technology firm, he also purses art as an 'off-the-clock hobby'. They bought a school bus in in 2016 and have dedicated their spare time within the last two years to repurpose it and turn it into a functional tiny home.
I chose this talk because I'm really interested in the tiny house industry, and I plan to build my own during my 5th year here as a master’s student. I was hoping to gain some insight into the DIY world and get some helpful tips from fellow New Englanders. This talk was not only informative but inspiring for me. Much like myself, they're multifaceted artists with experience in painting, woodworking, wielding/sculpture, and CAD design. These skills bridge the gap between art and functional day-to day objects, something I love! I think the most impressive part of their talk was hearing them talk about their ambitions behind the project; they intend to make everything on their own, down to toilet paper holders and wooden utensils! Seeing how artists utilize their wide collection of skills outside of the classroom and studio gives me hope for my future as a teacher and artist. It’s comforting to feel as though I can pursue my passion and be successful in the production of non-academic projects.
They talked a lot about how art functions in their lives, and how you can implement it into a job ora hobby, as both a traditional STEM major and an art major. It gives me hope and excitement, knowing that the journey and knowledge don’t end when college does. I don’t have to be in school to learn, grow, and try new things, something I often times don’t reflect on enough. I get worried thinking about how many art classes I’d like to take, and how little time I have left here at the university; but both Myles and Molly built on their skills and learned new things after graduating.
This talk furthered my dreams for building a tiny house and gave me some helpful resources for the future! Not only that, but it inspired me to continue growing and shaping my skills post-graduation.
